When selecting real, naturally created diamonds, there are many factors to consider. Between the carats, cuts, and inclusions, the jargon can get a bit complex. So what are inclusions in diamonds?
What Is A Diamond Inclusion?
Inclusions are small inconsistencies in diamonds formed underground, and can also be called clarity characteristics. Inclusions demonstrate that your stone is truly naturally created. Some inclusions make the diamond unique, while others may lower the value of the gem.
Types Of Diamond Inclusions
Some of the most common types of diamond clarity characteristics are:
- Bearding: fine lines that come from the center of the stone out to the surface. It can appear as if the surface is scratched or has hairline fractures.
- Chip: a nick in the surface of the diamond. The concern with a chip is that it could cause the diamond to chip further with more use and daily wear.
- Crystal: a mineral deposit inside a diamond. It could be another diamond inside the diamond, or another gemstone. Depending on the color of the crystal, it may be noticeable and affect the clarity of the diamond.
- Cloud: a group of crystals close to each other. As the name suggests, this causes a cloudy appearance in the diamond and may affect the quality of the gem depending on the size of the cloud.
- Graining: when crystals form in a pattern that appears as stripes or folds on the surface of the diamond.
Are Inclusions Bad?
The answer to this question depends on the cut and ring setting you are selecting, along with personal preference. Most diamonds will have some type of inclusion, and this can add more character to your gemstone. If one diamond is the main focal point of your ring, such as in a classic prong ring setting, your diamond should have fewer, smaller inclusions. Some types of inclusions will not affect the durability of the diamond at all, such as embedded crystals, and may even be hidden by the band design of a ring.
